Elderberries (Sambucus nigra) are the fruit from the magnificent Elder tree. The berries act as an immune system tonic through their ability to nourish, strengthen, and restore the immune system. Additionally, they are high in vitamins A, B, C, and antioxidants such as anthocyanin and rutin that help to reduce and protect the body from inflammation. They also have anti-viral/ bacterial properties through their ability to stop virus reproduction and are thus indicated to help the body ward off the common cold or something more serious like the flu. To make an elderberry decoction, add 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of elderberries to a saucepan. For a slightly warming and sweet flavor, you can add a cinnamon stick. Heat on high until the water begins to boil and then lower to a simmer for 15 minutes with a lid. Let cool for 5 minutes, strain, and enjoy!
