Rose hips are the fruit of rose plants and belong to the same family (Rosaceae) as apples, almonds, raspberries, and cherries. They are packed with vitamin C, E, K, and B and contain antioxidants and flavonoids that have a cooling and anti-inflammatory effect on the body and assist in fending off colds and the flu. Rose hips have both a sweet and slightly sour flavor which affect the cardiovascular system, specifically helping to strengthen and tonify the vasculature and heal damaged blood vessels. Rose also holds an important psycho-spiritual property of processing heartbreak, sadness, and grief and helps to uplift our hearts and move pent-up emotions stored within the body. Rose has a way of opening the heart to allow us to move into a place of softness while also allowing one to feel held, protected, and learn boundaries through the signature of its thorns.
To make an infusion, pour 1 cup of boiling water over 1 1/2 tablespoons of rose hips and let steep for 10-15 minutes. Make sure the tea is properly strained as the little hairs and seeds inside the rose hip can be irritating.
